HistoryThe practice of massage was described as a formal sequence by Henrik Pers Ling, a Swedish, hence the term "Swedish Massage". It is also known as "Holistic Massage". They are one and the same thing. This kind of massage may be carried out on the whole body using a massage medium which can be vegetable oils or powder such as talcum powder. At a physiological level, the sequence of strokes described by Ling help to stimulate all the systems of the body, particularly the cardiovascular and Lymph Systems. It is very effective in reducing muscle tension and painful and stiff joints. Psychologically and emotionally, massage comforts and soothes emotions. It helps to reduce stress, tension and anxiety. In turn massage produces a sense of calm and reflection. Trials have proven that massage is effective in lower blood pressure, for example. Aromatherapy involves a similar massage technique to Swedish Massage. Where it differs is in the use of essential plant oils which works with the massage to help reduce or eliminate specific problems, such as tension headaches, skin complaints, strained muscles, digestive complaints. It is also very effective in helping people to regain emotional balance when suffering from grief, depression, stress and anxiety. Aromatherapy is probably the most comprehensively reviewed of all complementary therapies. There is a huge body of published, peer-reviewed work done within the scientific community looking at the chemical make-up and efficacy of essential oils. The most influential person in the history of aromatherapy is a Frenchman called Rene- Maurice Gattefosse who carried out large scales trials on wounded soldiers in the 1st and 2nd world wars to record the effects of aromatherapy in healing their physical and emotional wounds. The benefit of massage is undeniable and has been known to man from as far back as our history is recorded from the early Egyptions and Hippocrates, to 19th century trail blazers such as Renee Gattefosse. In our modern day, complementary therapies of all kinds are becoming an increasingly important part of healthcare for many people who understand the need to look at their health holistically; both mind and body working as a whole and in balance. |
